He has published extensively in software testing, and is well known for his work in search-based software engineering and automated test case generation [1, 2]. Recent areas of research include automated repair of presentation failures (e.g., [3]) and using machine learning to tackle “flaky” developer tests [4, 5]. McMinn leads the Software Testing research group at Sheffield, which is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, comprising eight academics known for their work in, e.g., search-based testing, ML for testing/testing ML and model-based testing. According to a recent bibliometric study [6], his 2004 survey of search-based test data generation in the STVR journal [1] is the most cited paper in software testing since 1992, while his 2010 IEEE TSE [2] paper comparing search algorithms for test data generation is the most cited paper in software performance since 2010. He was named one of the top 15 most impactful mid-career software engineering researchers worldwide for 2010-2017 [7]. He has been an Associate Editor of STVR since 2016 and IEEE TSE 2014–2019 and has been a member of over 70 programme committees.
